Composition of AFFF

Since the 1950s, Aqueous Film-Forming Foam (AFFF) has been produced using chemicals known as perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), including two specific compounds: perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS). These man-made chemicals are effective in extinguishing fires involving flammable liquids by forming a barrier that prevents the fire from accessing the oxygen it requires to continue burning.

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has classified both PFOA and PFOS as “emerging contaminants,” indicating that they are under scrutiny for potentially harmful health impacts on humans. Furthermore, these substances are characterized by their “persistence,” meaning they do not degrade in the human body or the environment. The use of firefighting foam leads to the dispersal of PFOA and PFOS into the surrounding soil, posing a risk of contamination to local water supplies. Once consumed, these toxic PFAS compounds from AFFF remain in the body and can accumulate with each additional exposure.

Exposure to AFFF has been associated with an increased risk of developing various types of cancer, including:
